Lessons in Love

So the Pharisees and Sadducees, the ‘powers that be’, are still trying to catch Jesus out.

Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?

How sad that they didn’t really want to know the answer, for it might have got them out of their mindset of continually trying to trip others up!

For Jesus tells them,

‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’

What matters is loving God.

Not looking over your shoulder; not sifting through the minutiae of other people’s lives to see if they are “doing the right thing” (in your opinion of course);  not  thinking up difficult obstacles to stop people truly meeting with God, bringing freedom to people; not binding them in ridiculous laws.

Just loving God.  Focussing on him.  Thinking of all he has done, and responding to it.

And focussing on God, will bring about only one action:

‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’

Loving God will be the basis for living that out in love of others – and love of ourselves.

And loving others, and ourselves through the eyes of loving God.  So seeing what he sees, not what we think we see.

It can be hard to love others, but it can be so much harder to love ourselves…

It can be hard to love others unless we can love ourselves – and accept the love that God has for us – and for them.

God’s whole reason is love.

He pours out his love for us, and in him we discover the true meaning of love.  Without love, we miss the whole meaning of what wants to do, in us and through us.  Everything he does and says hangs on love.

Take some time to reflect on the depth of God’s love for you, and respond to him.

3 reasons

I don’t have to come here to be insulted, I can get that at home!  So the saying goes…

Such has been Paul’s experience in Philippi he says, but he has not let it put him off coming to Thessalonica, and with the courage given to him by God, he has continued to bring the Good News.

Paul has three reasons for doing what he’s doing, and risking all the abuse he gets:

  • He’s not trying to please people – but God
  • He always speaks as God wants
  • He’s ready to share, not just the good news – but their lives as well

Paul and his companions have lived a life that pointed to God.  It would have been easier at times not to, but they knew the Good News had to be lived and told, and so they set to it.  And they do it all because of love.  They love the Thessalonians, along with the other communities they have visited, so much, they are willing to suffer insult and persecution to please God, to speak as he wants them, and to share their very lives.

Their love is so overwhelming, that they can do little other than share.

But what about me?!

What are we prepared to put up with, so that we can continue to share the good news with others?

How much of our lives are we prepared to share?

Are we trying to please people – or only God?

Lord,

I know what you ask of me,

but I find it hard.

I don’t want to put all of me out there –

I want to keep some bits for myself;

I so want people to like me;

I like a reasonably easy life…

Lord,

fill me so full of your love for others

that I can do no other

than live solely for you

Holy Living – Living Wholly

“Holy” is one of those words that has bad connotations – “holier than thou”, or “holy Joe”.  It’s inference can be someone who stands aloof or sets them self apart as better than.

But what holy really means is:

dedicated or devoted to the service of God

and the command remains:

‘Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.

We are called to be holy – because God says so, and because he is holy.  And at the end of the day it is living a holy life that makes us whole.

So how do we go about living a holy life?

Well, Leviticus goes on to guide us:

  • Be honest and just
  • Don’t show favouritism
  • Don’t spread lies
  • Speak up for those who need it
  • Don’t bear a grudge
  • Don’t take revenge
  • Love your neighbour

This is the way God calls us to.  He is the Lord, he knows the best way to live – it’s the way he is.  That is our calling and our challenge.  To live in the world as good would, as he asks us.

How are we doing?

Lord

You call me to live holy,

to be just and honest,

to not spread lies,

or seek revenge,

to speak up for those who have no voice,

and to love…

Help me to live

in a way that shows your holiness,

and points others to you.

And when I get it wrong,

thank you that there is forgiveness,

and the chance to start again
