Storm Rider

The Great Storm of October 1987 is one that anyone who lived through it will remember for a long time.  Living in Manchester at the time, we did not bear the full brunt of it, but it was still scary and wild enough.

This was the result for one ferry:

Mark 4:35-41

A Storm

35 That evening, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the east side.” 36 So they left the crowd, and his disciples started across the lake with him in the boat. Some other boats followed along. 37 Suddenly a windstorm struck the lake. Waves started splashing into the boat, and it was about to sink.

38 Jesus was in the back of the boat with his head on a pillow, and he was asleep. His disciples woke him and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re about to drown?”

39 Jesus got up and ordered the wind and the waves to be quiet. The wind stopped, and everything was calm.

40 Jesus asked his disciples, “Why were you afraid? Don’t you have any faith?”

41 Now they were more afraid than ever and said to each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

There is a popular misconception that if you become a Christian life will be wonderful.  All your worries and problems will be gone.  It only takes a quick look around to realise that is not true.  I’m sure we all know some wonderful people, who despite doing amazing, helpful, loving things, still have their fair share – if not more – of problems.
For becoming a Christian does not take you out of the world.  We still live in it, and part of human life is facing the challenges that come along.  If that sounds glib and simplistic, it is not meant to.  But being a Christian is not living separate from life, but living fully in it.
In this passage, the disciples were not saved from being in the storm because they had Jesus riding with them.  Storms happen.  What Jesus does say, is that they do not need to be afraid in the storm.  They had panicked that they were about to drown.  They were annoyed that Jesus was sleeping through it.  Anyone who’s ever struggled to sleep know that it is not an awareness of a situation that stops you sleeping, but worrying what you can do about it.  It wasn’t that Jesus didn’t know there was a storm, but that he wasn’t worried that they would drown that meant he was at peace.
It can be easy to be too simplistic, to sing along with the children’s song, “With Christ in the vessel we can smile at the storm”.  Storms are scary.  We would be strange if we smiled along through them, but with Jesus riding with us, we can avail ourselves of the peace he knows and brings to the situation.  He rides with us, not as a talisman to avert disaster, but as a real presence of God in and through it.
Lord
at times life is stormy and turbulent;
we are tossed about, scared, worried we will be overwhelmed.
Thank you
that whatever the turbulence of our life
you are there with us,right in the midst.
Thank you for your peace and your power,
may I know that presence
in the storms of my life,
that enable me to cling on to you
and know that you are with me

No Holding Back

It’s time.  A deadline is here.  It’s time for that appointment.  The train is leaving now.  It is time to make that decision.  You need to be ready now.

What is it time for in your life?

6 We work together with God, and we beg you to make good use of God’s kindness to you. In the Scriptures God says,

“When the time came,
I listened to you,
and when you needed help,
I came to save you.”

That time has come. This is the day for you to be saved.

We don’t want anyone to find fault with our work, and so we try hard not to cause problems. But in everything and in every way we show that we truly are God’s servants. We have always been patient, though we have had a lot of trouble, suffering, and hard times. We have been beaten, put in jail, and hurt in riots. We have worked hard and have gone without sleep or food. But we have kept ourselves pure and have been understanding, patient, and kind. The Holy Spirit has been with us, and our love has been real. We have spoken the truth, and God’s power has worked in us. In all our struggles we have said and done only what is right.

Whether we were honoured or dishonoured or praised or cursed, we always told the truth about ourselves. But some people said we did not. We are unknown to others, but well known to you. We seem to be dying, and yet we are still alive. We have been punished, but never killed, 10 and we are always happy, even in times of suffering. Although we are poor, we have made many people rich. And though we own nothing, everything is ours.

11 Friends in Corinth, we are telling the truth when we say that there is room in our hearts for you. 12 We are not holding back on our love for you, but you are holding back on your love for us. 13 I speak to you as I would speak to my own children. Please make room in your hearts for us.

God’s time.  God has listened and knows we need help – and he is here with it.

The time has come – now is the day for you to be saved?

But what does that mean?  What does it look like in reality?

God longs to touch us, to help us, to love us – if only we will let him.

We are not holding back on our love for you

That’s what it looks like when God is here to save us – people loving us in his name.

And that is what is required of us for others to see him saving them.  Loving God’s ways.  That’s an awesome responsibility if God’s way of seeing need and sending help is by sending us!  Paul says that they have worked hard not to make problems, been understanding patient and kind.  Are they the qualities we show?  The characteristics that will show others God’s love and that he has come to rescue them in their need?

It’s time.

  • Is it time for you to discover God and how he can help you?
  • Is it time for you to discover how you can love others in his name?

What is it time for you to do today?  For yourself?  For God?  For others?

Lets make room.

Thank you Lord
that you listen to me,
you know my need,
and you come to rescue me.
Thank you for your love,
so often shown through others.
And Lord,
as I receive,
so may I give.
Help me to live in a way
that others can see and feel you,
know that you come to them
and rescue them.
I pray that in me
there will be no holding back
of your love
and mine

“You’re only young” they said.  “You’re not very strong”, “You’re not from round here”, “they’ll never listen to you”.  It is so easy to put obstacles in the path of those who want to help, to make them doubt their own abilities and make it clear that we doubt them too.

1 Samuel 17:32-49

32 “Your Majesty,” he said, “this Philistine shouldn’t turn us into cowards. I’ll go out and fight him myself!”

33 “You don’t have a chance against him,” Saul replied. “You’re only a boy, and he’s been a soldier all his life.”

34 But David told him:

Your Majesty, I take care of my father’s sheep. And when one of them is dragged off by a lion or a bear, 35 I go after it and beat the wild animal until it lets the sheep go. If the wild animal turns and attacks me, I grab it by the throat and kill it.

36 Sir, I have killed lions and bears that way, and I can kill this worthless Philistine. He shouldn’t have made fun of the army of the living God! 37 The Lord has rescued me from the claws of lions and bears, and he will keep me safe from the hands of this Philistine.

“All right,” Saul answered, “go ahead and fight him. And I hope the Lord will help you.”

38 Saul had his own military clothes and armour put on David, and he gave David a bronze helmet to wear. 39 David strapped on a sword and tried to walk around, but he was not used to wearing those things.

“I can’t move with all this stuff on,” David said. “I’m just not used to it.”

David took off the armour 40 and picked up his shepherd’s stick. He went out to a stream and picked up five smooth rocks and put them in his leather bag. Then with his sling in his hand, he went straight toward Goliath.

David Kills Goliath

41 Goliath came toward David, walking behind the soldier who was carrying his shield. 42 When Goliath saw that David was just a healthy, good-looking boy, he made fun of him. 43 “Do you think I’m a dog?” Goliath asked. “Is that why you’ve come after me with a stick?” He cursed David in the name of the Philistine gods 44 and shouted, “Come on! When I’m finished with you, I’ll feed you to the birds and wild animals!”

45 David answered:

You’ve come out to fight me with a sword and a spear and a dagger. But I’ve come out to fight you in the name of the Lord All-Powerful. He is the God of Israel’s army, and you have insulted him too!

46 Today the Lord will help me defeat you. I’ll knock you down and cut off your head, and I’ll feed the bodies of the other Philistine soldiers to the birds and wild animals. Then the whole world will know that Israel has a real God. 47 Everybody here will see that the Lord doesn’t need swords or spears to save his people. The Lord always wins his battles, and he will help us defeat you.

48 When Goliath started forward, David ran toward him. 49 He put a rock in his sling and swung the sling around by its straps. When he let go of one strap, the rock flew out and hit Goliath on the forehead. It cracked his skull, and he fell facedown on the ground.

They underestimated David and what he could do.  They saw a young boy, he saw himself as a strong and fearless shepherd, able to fight off wild animals from his father’s sheep.  They saw the need for armour, he wanted to do things the way he knew how.  They saw a mighty,  enemy who could not be beaten, he saw just one more attack to be dealt with.  Goliath came to fight with his might and strength, David came in the power of the Lord.  And the rest, as they say, is history.

Again we have a story of someone being overlooked, or tried to fit into the right shaped box – one that others were comfortable with.

  • How often do we stop people doing something really big by persuading them that they can’t do it without even letting them try?
  • How often do we try to make them do what they want to do in the “expected” way, rather than the way they are comfortable with?
  • Are we, by our actions, empowering others to work for God, to do great things?  Or are we weighing them down in ways they are not comfortable with, because it’s the way we are comfortable with?

Imagine what would have happened if David had listened to the people.  No one would have taken Goliath on and his power over them would have continued.  And if he had gone out in the set of armour, “properly” equipped, he would have been defeated and not achieved the freedom from the tyranny of Goliath and the Philistines that he did.

David wasn’t prepared to let Goliath turn them all into cowards, people paralysed by fear and a feeling of inadequacy to act – what about us?

Thank you Lord,

that you take us as the people we are,

with the skills we bring –

you don’t need us to conform to others expectations,

but can use who we are.

Forgive me Lord,

for the times when I have put others off,

stopped them doing something,

persuaded them that they were inadequate,

or doing it the wrong way.

Lord,

use me,

that we are not made cowards of,

but stand in your name.
