Psalm 124

2013-01-13 16.23.19

A Psalm of promise, of thanks, of hope, of clinging to God who rescues us.

Psalm 124

Psalm 124 (CEV)

(A song by David for worship.)

Thanking the Lord for Victory

124 The Lord was on our side!
Let everyone in Israel say:
“The Lord was on our side!
Otherwise, the enemy attack
would have killed us all,
    because it was furious.
We would have been swept away
    in a violent flood
    of high and roaring waves.”

Let’s praise the Lord!
He protected us from enemies
    who were like wild animals,
    and we escaped like birds
    from a hunter’s torn net.

The Lord made heaven and earth,
    and he is the one
    who sends us help.

A Helping Hand – Psalm 145:10-18

Psalm 145:10-18 (CEV)

10 All creation will thank you,
    and your loyal people
    will praise you.
11 They will tell about
    your marvelous kingdom
    and your power.
12 Then everyone will know about
    the mighty things you do
    and your glorious kingdom.
13 Your kingdom will never end,
    and you will rule forever.

Our Lord, you keep your word
    and do everything you say.
14 When someone stumbles or falls,
    you give a helping hand.
15 Everyone depends on you,
and when the time is right,
    you provide them with food.
16 By your own hand
    you satisfy
the desires of all who live.

17 Our Lord, everything you do
    is kind and thoughtful,
18     and you are near to everyone
    whose prayers are sincere.

Thank you Lord
for being my helping hand.

That when I fall,
you pick me up;
you feed me –
physically,
emotionally,
spiritually;
you meet my every need,
whether I am aware of it
or not.

Thank you Lord,
that you always walk near me
and are always watching out for me.

Thank you for the people
you use to do that with you,
May I in turn
be part of your work
in supporting others.

God, Ready to Help

Psalm 46 (CEV)

(A special song for the people of Korah and for the music leader.)

God Is Our Mighty Fortress

46 God is our mighty fortress,
    always ready to help
    in times of trouble.
And so, we won’t be afraid!
    Let the earth tremble
    and the mountains tumble
    into the deepest sea.
Let the ocean roar and foam,
    and its raging waves
    shake the mountains.

A river and its streams
    bring joy to the city,
    which is the sacred home
    of God Most High.
God is in that city,
and it won’t be shaken.
He will help it at dawn.

Nations rage! Kingdoms fall!
But at the voice of God
    the earth itself melts.
The Lord All-Powerful
    is with us.
    The God of Jacob
    is our fortress.

Come! See the fearsome things
the Lord has done on earth.
God brings wars to an end
    all over the world.
He breaks the arrows,
shatters the spears,
    and burns the shields.
10 Our God says, “Calm down,
and learn that I am God!
    All nations on earth
    will honor me.”

11 The Lord All-Powerful
    is with us.
    The God of Jacob
    is our fortress.

A God always ready to help.  A God of strength and safety.  A God who is always with us.  A God who shatters spears, burns shields, breaks arrows – that’s my kind of God.  When people let us down, scare us, hurt us, or reject us – he never will.

But God is more than that.  He invites us to know him.  A God who urges us to calm down…, to learn that he is God.  Or the more familiar,

Be still, and know that I am God

I thought this was an interesting interpretation of this Psalm:

And maybe this makes it more real in the place you are today:

God is God.  In our fear, our pain, our distress, our discomfort, our heartbreak, our trouble…

God is there.  Ready to help.
