Promises kept

Luke 1:57– 80

The Birth of John the Baptist

When Elizabeth‘s son was born, her neighbours and relatives heard how kind the Lord had been to her, and they too were glad.

Eight days later they did for the child what the Law of Moses commands. They were going to name him Zechariah, after his father.  But Elizabeth said, “No! His name is John.”  The people argued, “No one in your family has ever been named John.”   So they motioned to Zechariah to find out what he wanted to name his son.

Zechariah asked for a writing tablet. Then he wrote, “His name is John.” Everyone was amazed. Right away, Zechariah started speaking and praising God.

All the neighbours were frightened because of what had happened, and everywhere in the hill country people kept talking about these things.  Everyone who heard about this wondered what this child would grow up to be. They knew that the Lord was with him.

Zechariah Praises the Lord

The Holy Spirit came upon Zechariah, and he began to speak:

Praise the Lord,

the God of Israel!

He has come

to save his people.

Our God has given us

a mighty Saviour from the family

of David his servant.

Long ago the Lord promised

by the words

of his holy prophets

to save us from our enemies

and from everyone

who hates us.

God said he would be kind

to our people

and keep

his sacred promise.

He told our ancestor Abraham

that he would rescue us

from our enemies.

Then we could serve him

without fear,

by being holy and good

as long as we live.

You, my son, will be called

a prophet of God

in heaven above.

You will go ahead of the Lord

to get everything ready

for him.

You will tell his people

that they can be saved

when their sins

are forgiven.

God’s love and kindness

will shine upon us

like the sun that rises

in the sky. On us who live

in the dark shadow

of death

this light will shine

to guide us

into a life of peace.

As John grew up, God’s Spirit gave him great power. John lived in the desert until the time he was sent to the people of Israel.

And so it begins.  The forerunner is here – the one who has come to tell of all that will happen, the one who has come to show others the way, to open the world to the possibilities of God.

The world was lost, hurting, desolate, going the wrong way – God is about to do something about it.  Salvation is here.

God keeps his promise – he’s coming to rescue us.

Sins can be forgiven, wrongs can be righted, love and kindness and peace will have their place.  On those who live in the dark, the dawn is coming.

That is all here for us today.  DO you want to have a part of it?

Reach out to God and receive all he has to offer.

Just a  note to say, although I think we should save Christmas for Christmas and not jump too soon,  I’ve covered the birth story at this point to get all the readings in before Christmas, to be able to reflect on the whole story during Advent – and I think the impetus is lost once Christmas Day is here.  Right or wrong? – Let me know…

Working it out

God is working His purpose out
As year succeeds to year;
God is working his purpose out,
And the time is drawing near;
Nearer and nearer draws the time,
The time that shall surely be,
When the earth shall be filled
With the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea.

From utmost east to utmost west,
Where’er man’s foot hath trod,
By the mouth of many messengers
Goes forth the voice of God:
“Give ear to Me, ye continents,
Ye isles, give ear to Me,’
That the earth may be filled
With the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea.

What can we do to work God’s work,
To prosper and increase
The brotherhood of all mankind,
The reign of the Prince of Peace?
What can we do to hasten the time,
The time that shall surely be,
When the earth shall be filled
With the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea.

March we forth in the strength of God,
With the banner of Christ unfurled,
That the light of the glorious Gospel of truth
May shine throughout the world;
Fight we the fight with sorrow and sin
To set their captives free,
That the earth may be filled
With the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea.

All we can do is nothing worth
Unless God blesses the deed;
Vainly we hope for the harvest-tide
Till God gives life to the seed;
Yet near and nearer draws the time,
The time that shall surely be,
When the earth shall be filled
With the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea.

Lord

come to me,

fill me,

use me,

equip me.

Let me allow you to fill up my life,

to lead me where you want me to go,

to take me on a journey with you,

to be part of all you have planned.

Lord, may I let you have your way in me.

What does the Lord require of You?

Luke 1:39-45 – the realization that this will be a special baby

Mary Visits Elizabeth

A short time later Mary hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea.  She went into Zechariah’s home, where she greeted Elizabeth.  When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, her baby moved within her.

The Holy Spirit came upon Elizabeth.  Then in a loud voice she said to Mary:

God has blessed you more than any other woman! He has also blessed the child you will have.  Why should the mother of my Lord come to me?  As soon as I heard your greeting, my baby became happy and moved within me.  The Lord has blessed you because you believed that he will keep his promise.

So I went off to see Elizabeth.  I thought she might be the one person who would understand.  After all God was working in her life as well.  God had given her a special child to carry too.  Her son was going to show the way. He was going to tell others about my son, God’s son.

But I never even got chance to tell her.  Before the words were out of my mouth she knew.  The one within her, recognised the one within me.  His showing others had begun already, as he let his mother now that something special was happening in me, something important was happening in the world.

God was working – and he was doing it now.

What precious thing is God wanting to do in your life?  Does he have something for you to carry for him?  Something for you to do for him?

It may seem inconvenient, difficult, even downright embarrassing.  But doing something for God is a privilege.

Are you listening for his call?  When you hear his call, will you answer?  Will you let him work in you and through you?  Bringing him into the world, pointing the way to him?
