Don’t be so ignorant!
Over the last few weeks, I seem to have sent a long time mulling over the best car to buy for us next. To do that we have visited (many) showrooms, and (even more) websites. It is important when making a major purchase to make in informed decision.
Informed decision making seems to be what the author of both Proverbs and Ephesians are talking about – but about something far more important than what car to own, about life, and how to live it. When I was a girl, being called ignorant was a bit of an insult, but the dictionary defines ignorance as being unaware or uninformed.
So we are called to inform ourselves. To be careful how we live. To make good use of every opportunity we have. The ignorant are invited in, but invited to leave their ignorant ways. How do we do this? Ephesians 5:17 has the answer: “Try to find out what the Lord wants you to do”. Being informed means finding out what God wants. Do we spend as much time researching his ways as we would for a major purchase. Do we read, pray, wait in his presence – and when we have, do we do it.
Having done my car research, it would be foolish to ignore it, to buy a car that wasn’t right for our needs, to put aside tests that suggest it isn’t the safest, the most economical, the right size, insurance group or tax bracket. Being informed is to help us make the right choices. Being informed by what God says is to help us make the right choices for life. The Message version of Proverbs -“Leave your impoverished confusion and live! Walk up the street to a life with meaning”. God invites us to leave our life of confusion, to find our answers in him, and to live in his ways.
