Betrayal – not me

It seems to me that the theme of Holy Week is betrayal.  We are familiar with thinking of Judas as the betrayer – but he wasn’t the only one…

Peter swears he will always follow Jesus and never go back on it; but the minute his back is against the wall, he denies that he ever knew Jesus, let alone followed him.

And in the Garden of Gethsemane on the night before he died, all Jesus asks of the disciples stay awake with him whilst he prays.  Could they do that?  Not even for one hour.

Jesus asked relatively little, and they couldn’t manage it.  To acknowledge him, to stay awake and pray.  If that were us, we would have managed it – wouldn’t we??  How about today in our lives?  Is it easier to say I don’t know Jesus?  Do we lose focus in the task he has called us to?  Or do we stand for him and what he means to us.  Do we follow his call passionately and diligently?  Or betray him in our lives?
